The Grade II* listed, Great Hall at Howell’s School was originally constructed in 1958. With Henstaff’s experience in traditional and technical builds we undertook a complete slate roof replacement with large amount of complex lead replacement under a temporary roof structure. The historic artefacts, including magnificent murals of Shakespearean scenes by J M Staniforth and a Danish oak floor were kept projected throughout the project.
Working in close liaison with the client, Davies Sutton Architects and the conservation architect the repair & refurbishment of this Listed building under JCT2011 with Contractor’s Design worked smoothly. As a site team we liaised with the school and design team to ensure we planned and implemented systems that retained pupil access around and in some cases through the scheme. These workshops also resulted in the site setup being out of term time to ensure minimal impact and completed the works within a live environment.
All Joinery repairs were undertaken to match existing details and finishes both internally and externally. We are proud to be able to and deliver to a high standard, working on historic and heritage related sites, such as this with quality traditional workmanship and methods.
The project was delivered to the client’s requirements and satisfaction and resulted in further repeat contracts of over £2m between Henstaff and the school.
Social Value
All our staff working in an environment where they were in contact with vulnerable adults or children are DBS checked – if needed we will carry out an enhanced check. This practice is passed onto our contractors who are responsible for carrying out the relevant checks for their staff. All of our employees and subcontractors were trained and DBS checked prior to commencement of works.
