Client: Bryncethin RFC Ltd
Team: PDW Buildings designs; Smeaton Associates; SPR Hooper
This new facility is now a fantastic home for Bryncethin Rugby Club as well as a range of community groups and events. The project has developed a two-storey community centre and clubhouse with disability-friendly facilities including a lift accessing both floors, a large meeting room with a balcony overlooking the rugby-pitch, smaller meeting rooms, a kitchen and IT suite, and of course, changing rooms.
Under the JCT2016 Minor Works contract for Adaption and alteration works the scheme has built on top of the old, dilapidated sports pavilion. Originally built back in 1953 by club members and volunteers using donated materials, it was coming to the end of its time. With over 20 years’ experience of refurbishment projects and a “hands on” approach, Henstaff constructed an additional floor with the introduction of a new steelwork frame and foundations to take the new vertical extension. Requiring technical and programme input in the form of temporary works and phasing.
During the works the front elevation was extended and full internal alterations, thermal upgrade and finishes to provide a top-class community hub to serve the club and wider community.
Winner LABC Building Excellence Awards 2020 “best public service building”.
Social Value
The opening of the modern club-house and versatile community hub on time and to budget, is a tribute to collaboration, passion and willingness of Club members and the local community. All of whom have worked tirelessly with Henstaff to make this happen. Along with the support Bridgend County Borough Council, BAVO and funding from the Welsh Rugby Union, the National Lottery Community Fund and Rural Communities Development Fund.
At the end of the scheme Bryncethin now has an award winning, modern Community centre, club house and changing facilities, with a double sized room including a movable partition to provide adaptability of the space alongside a range of other DDA compliant lift and amenities. We hope that this means that Bryncethin RFC and the Community Hub will be around for another 130 years.
